Let Us At Last Praise The Colonizers Of Dreams

Polaroid’s Grey Label, the first release since bringing Lady Gaga on board, includes a portable printer, retro looking digital camera and glasses that record video. I can’t see myself buying any of these but I love that Polaroid is trying something different. Better to flame out than rust, I suppose.

Some of you may be interested in Paul Giambarba’s* thoughts on the Polaroid/Lady Gaga mash-up.
As for me, I mostly think it’s sad. Not because of Lady Gaga, but because Edwin Land’s original invention was truly remarkable and groundbreaking. This feels a little like the time I saw Dee Dee Ramone play only a few months before he died, and he was trying SO HARD to still be Dee Dee Ramone! And to rock out! But it was uncomfortable and kind of sad and I had to leave midway through even though The Ramones, man. The Ramones. My whole life, I have loved that band. I had a goldfish named Joey when I was nine, for chrissakes.
So right, this whole thing? A desperate death rattle, with a bunch of look-how-futuristic-and-groundbreaking-we-are-no-seriously-THIS-IS-SOME-GROUNDBREAKING-BUSINESS-LADY-GAGA-SAYS-SO. Polaroid shouldn’t cozy up to pop icons. Polaroid IS an icon. Or it was, anyway.
*Who is Paul Giambarba? You know those famous Polaroid color stripes? He created them, while branding Polaroid from 1957-1977.
